Decisionspace is a prototype of a chatroom interface on the web. However it differs in two main ways from a regular chatroom:

1. Whereas most chatrooms are linear in their presentation of the text, in decisionspace users may type anywhere within the chatroom.

2. Rather than scrolling off the top of the screen messages fade out as others are posted. However users may vote to keep a message from fading away by clicking on it.

I imagine that this environment would suit various types of activities better than a regular chatroom. For example it could be a good aid to making simple decisions and would make a dynamic environment for brainstorming.

Because users can place their text anywhere on the screen, there is the possibility that the space could become loaded with social meaning. This could evolve organically with people placing comments near those of others in support, or even on top of others in defiance.

The following prototypes have been created in macromedia director, and for now do not include any network functionality. In a working version there would be no new user button.

There are several possibilities for continuing this. The voting could be limited to rounds, the users could chose their fonts, or be allocated certain colours.
