The SillyTone Squish Factory is an electronic music controller with a squishy, enticing interface. The design goals were to have an instrument that was intuitive, fun, and unintimidating to novice users.

The skin is made of silicone, and is quite flexible. Inside, there are two mechanisms, one for each handle, consisting of a 2x2 array of force-sensitive resistors anchored by filament to the base of the handle. When the handle is manipulated, the direction is interpolated by checking the varying signals sent out by the FSRs. There is a FSR at the tip of each handle, as well, to detect squeezing. All signals are sent via Open Sound Control to a computer running a PureData patch, where they are synthesized into beautiful music.

The Squish Factory was played by Palo Alto Elementry School students on a field trip to Stanford, and was demonstrated at the NIME04 (New Interfaces for Musical Expression) conference in Hammamatsu, Japan.
