Et Al. is a collaborative recording project. I set up a booth in a public plaza with musical instruments and recording equipment. Passersby were stopped and asked to record themselves live - singing, playing, or speaking - or to draw a picture. I then mixed the recordings into five songs, and used the drawings to make liner notes. I used every recording and drawing submitted, and strove to keep all recorded material recognizable, so that everyone who submitted a piece would hear/see themselves in the final product. Everyone who contributed recieved a copy of the CD and liner notes. My goal was to help people overcome their inhibitions about doing creative work. I sense in many people a fear to make art or music because they feel they are not talented or skilled enough - that they aren't worthy of the task or would embarrass themselves. I hope Et Al. provided people with a chance to overcome these reservations and gave them a sense of accomplishment and shared authorship of a piece of art. |
