For our final assignment at Parsons, we were to design an invitation to the Dia:Beacon minimalist art museum, based on the work of one of the featured artists. I designed this invitation after the fashion of Sol LeWitt's piece "Wall Drawings," which consists of several 3x3 grids of cross hatched squares, drawn with pencil directly on the gallery walls. I was struck with the piece's depth and tranquility. For my invitation, I devised a typeface based on "Wall Drawings" in which each letter is composed of 9 cross hatched squares, to spell out dia:BEACON. Each invitation was printed onto a little block of drywall to tie it more closely to the original piece, to give it a more visceral impact, and to leave the invitee a small artifact/memento. |
