For Betty Boop Paper I started out with an old Betty Boop cartoon, stripped the soundtrack and added my own, comprised wholly of recordings of myself, mostly unedited, drawing on, erasing, ripping, crumpling, and otherwise manipulating paper.

To me, the interesting thing about this project was that cartoons are generally synchronized with a pre-written score. But the synchronization is never perfect. By going in and scoring a new soundtrack, tied frame to frame to the animation, I was able to uncover hidden rhythms and new melodies. Watching this, for me, is like reading a familiar book in a foreign translation - inscrutable, but nonetheless adhering to its own internal logic.
